To serve families, you should start with getting to know them. There are many ways to do this and the Starter Kit for All covers a few strategies. This is a core piece of family engagement that creates a strong foundation for your work.
It will likely take time to get to know your families and start building strong relationships. That is completely normal. By starting slow and being intentional, you can foster strong engagement that builds momentum.
Absolutely essential to family engagement is trust. It creates an environment in which families can be confident that the information you are sharing with them is accurate and you have their best interest in mind. Getting to know your families and starting slow are the ways you can work toward trusting relationships.
It wouldn’t be by GEAR UP, for GEAR UP without the Prove component. Data is an integral part of our work and this section shares what to think about, who you might talk to, and some examples of how to collect data. As with all elements of your programming, this will depend on your specific GEAR UP program and local context.
As you get to know your families, build relationships, and establish trust, you’ll need to start your services somewhere. The ideas in this section come from NCCEP’s Family Engagement Advisory Committee, who agreed that services on these topics will benefit GEAR UP families everywhere.
